Sywell Skirt – Free sewing pattern

Who needs a skirt? How about a knit, bandless one? I hope you will like the Sywell Skirt! This pencil skirt is quick and easy to make. It’s available in sizes up to UK 26 (US 22).

Sizing: If you’re not sure which size to choose, check the measurements charts https://midnightsewer.com/measurements-charts/

Scroll to the bottom of the post to download the pattern, it’s available in A4 format. You can turn off the layers in Adobe Acrobat and print just the one you want. It will be easier to see the correct lines. You can find the option at: View -> Show/Hide -> Navigation Panes -> Layers

Start with printing the first page and make sure the test box is 5 x 5 cm.
You can try printing on different paper formats but always select printing to 100%. Let me know if you have any issues.

Whenever you can, make a toile before cutting through your favourite fabric.

Pattern assembly (A4):

Tape the pages as shown in the picture below.

Seam allowances:
Seam allowances are included. You can see them on the pattern itself.

Recommended fabrics:
30-50% stretch knit fabrics.

Extras: Narrow elastic for the waist.

Fabric requirements:
Approx. 1m of fabric. Width of fabric: 1.5m

Cutting:
Front 1 (yoke) x2 on the fabric fold
Front 2 x1 on the fabric fold
Front 3 x1 on the fabric fold
Back 1 (yoke) x2 on the fabric fold
Back 2 x1 on the fabric fold
Back 3 x1 on the fabric fold

Instructions (this is my preferred method, you can do it differently):

Put top tier (yoke) pieces aside and sew lower tiers together; sew front pieces with right sides facing, then back and after that sew side seams joining two panels together. Use zigzag or overlocker.

Optional: before sewing the sides, topstitch each tier. That will create a neat finish and keep seam allowances flat.

Sew yoke sides together with right sides facing. There are two layers of the yoke.

Cut and sew elastic edges together by overlapping them. Make sure you cut your elastic a little bit shorter than your waist (85-90% of waist circumference).

Sew both yoke layers together at the waist and attach elastic to the seam allowance so it finishes at the edge of the skirt seam allowance. Stretch it evenly before sewing. Pins will help you to keep it in place.

When you turn the yoke inside out there will be no stitches visible to either side.
Attach yoke to the rest of the skirt. Sew three layers together and press with an iron. Topstitch from the outside (optional).

You can now hem the skirt 🙂
